The study of Primary Progressive Aphasias (PPA), a group of syndromes due to different neurodegenerative conditions in which the language deficit is relatively selective in the early stages of disease, has both theoretical and clinical relevance. PPA provides an excellent neurological model for the investigation of the neurobiology of language, as the topography of the neuroanatomical degeneration permits to investigate the role in linguistic functions of brain regions seldom affected by ischemic stroke, where lesion location is constrained by the vascular distribution territories. At the clinical level, PPA is a testing ground for non- pharmacological interventions, from speech and language therapy to non-invasive neuromodulation, aiming at a comprehensive management of this relatively rare, but severely disabling condition.
